Don’t Believe that In-State Schools are a Better Bargain

This is one of the biggest myths in college finance. The out-of-state tuition may be higher, but the real cost of going to that out-of-state school could actually be lower than going to a comparable in-state university. How much you will pay to go to college depends on many factors so don't dismiss an out-of-state school until you've done your homework - I know, MORE homework! - and you've figured out how much each school you're interested in attending might potentially cost (a good place to start figuring this out is by personalizing your affordability).

Keep an Open Mind
Unless you have a reason that you need to stay close to home, stay open to schools that are further away from home than you had previously considered.

Look for Schools Close to Things You Like to Do
Now that you know that out-of-state schools aren’t off the radar, give some thought to the types of things you really enjoy. Do you love skiing? Maybe there is a school in Colorado or New Mexico that might be a great fit for you. Look at it this way, this may be the one time in your life where you have complete freedom to choose where you want to spend the next four years.
